The water-bird population native to the Ayeyawady River has been reduced by between 60-90 per cent over the past 14 years, with bird catching and the gold rush to blame, according to a report of Fauna and Flora International (FFI). The report covered the part of the river between Myitkyina Township in Kachin State and Mandalay, and advised conservation of the area immediately as it is important for the river’s ecosystem. FFI’s experts reported a sharp decrease in local water-bird population since their last observation in 2003.
