Request for Expressions of Interest: Environmental and Social Impact Assessment to Inform the Potential Designation of Wonegizi and Wologizi as Protected or Conserved Areas (PCAs)

Gret has received a financing from Agence Française de Développement (“AFD”), and intends to use part of the funds thereof for payments under the following project Wonegizi-Wologizi Initiative for

Sustainable Ecosystems (WISE). The Services of the consultant shall consist of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment to inform the potential designation of Wonegizi and Wologizi as protected or conserved areas (PCAs).

The transboundary Wologizi-Wonegizi-Ziama (WWZ) forest landscape holds some of the largest remaining forests within the Upper Guinean forest ecosystem, and is a widely recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot home to more than 25% of Africa’s mammals. The Ziama Reserve in Guinea and the Wonegizi and Wologizi Proposed Protected Area (PPA) in Liberia are each noted as key biodiversity areas (KBAs). These KBAs possess high levels of species richness and endemism of both fauna and flora, and harbour flagship species. It is also a vital species migration connectivity area between Guinea and Liberia.  AFD supports the implementation of the project Sustainable management of Wonegizi-Wologizi forests landscape in Liberia (WISE) and has committed 9 M€ to the project. The project is coordinated by GRET and FFI who are working alongside government authorities in Liberia such as the Forestry Development Authority  (FDA) and Liberia Land Authority (LLA).

The ESIA should start in 2026 and be implemented along 12 months to cover two climatic seasons. The estimated maximum time-input for the international consultant and the accredited national expert is 130 days.
