The Centre for Gender Research at Uppsala University opens a position as PhD in Gender Studies, in collaboration with SWEDESD. The project will be based at the Centre for Gender Research. The doctoral candidate will conduct their project in collaboration with SWEDESD as part of ongoing WASH research. The project will primarily use qualitative methods to examine the intersection of gender, WASH and animal caretaking practices. This responds to the need to better understand transmission pathways related to childhood diarrhea, and how to intervene in more gender-responsive and effective ways.

The Centre for Gender Research welcomes applications with PhD project proposals that are critically informed by gender studies, and animal studies and/or development studies and directed towards issues such as: agriculture, water and sanitation; animal caretaking practices and human health; animals and urban water provision. The orientation of the thesis project pursued by the PhD candidate must be situated within the field of Gender Studies. Fieldwork is likely to be conducted in a country in Africa, this should be reflected in the project proposal.

The PhD program spans four years of full-time work, and is financed with a salaried position as doctoral student. The PhD candidate is expected to work full time in the program, and contribute actively to the Centre’s and the PhD program’s activities and milieu as well as engage with activities at SWEDESD. Additional service at the Centre for Gender Research, in administration and/or education, may apply (max 20%) which then prolongs the duration of the PhD program with the corresponding time.
