The Berghof Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization supporting people in conflict in their efforts to achieve sustainable peace through conflict transformation and peacebuilding. Headquartered in Berlin, the organization is run by a diverse team and works with local partners around the world.

The Mission

The Senior Advisor on Climate and Peace (all genders) will devise and help lead the integration of climate into Berghof's conflict transformation practice, research and training. In collaboration with the Executive Director and Heads of Department, they will be responsible for the development and growth of this strategic focal area for the organisation, as well as advising on the implementation of environmental peacebuilding initiatives. The Senior Advisor on Climate and Peace will provide content support to colleagues, ensure internal coordination, forge new partnerships and represent Berghof externally on the topic, identifying and driving forward new initiatives for the organisation in the field of climate and peace.

Overview of the position:

Hours: Full-or Part-time (min 30h / week)

Starting date: As soon as possible

Duration: Two-year contract with the possibility of renewal

Location: Berlin

  •  Expand Berghof’s activities in the strategic focal area of climate and peace, working collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.
  •  Provide guidance to help ensure Berghof has the strategy and people to drive peacebuilding programming which addresses the range of threats to peace and security posed by climate change.
  •  Support the conceptual development of climate and peace activities and components, including substantive inputs to support Berghof facilitation at workshops on the topic.
  •  Identify gaps in the field and devise plans for Berghof to contribute to filling such gaps, particularly around building an evidence base of practical responses and developing monitoring and evaluation approaches.
  •  Strengthen the Berghof Foundation’s current conflict transformation approaches and methods by further integrating climate change and environmental protection into more aspects of its work by providing in-depth knowledge and analysis.
  •  Develop best practices, new concepts and initiatives at the nexus of climate and peace, including planning and measuring impact.
  •  Build new partnerships with stakeholders relevant to the topic, including NGOs, academic institutions, governmental agencies and others.
  •  Together with the Berghof Foundation’s Strategic Partnership Team identify funding opportunities and develop proposals to secure financial support for climate and peace projects.
  •  Strategic networking for the organisation and raising the profile in the field of climate & peace as well as ensuring visibility of the Berghof Foundation’s work across a wide range of actors.
  •  Raise awareness and push for donors and the international community to prioritise climate-risk informed peacebuilding through strategic communications and outreach.
  •  Conduct regular outreach to government officials, international contacts, and other stakeholders. This will include meetings, writing opinion pieces as well as in-depth reports and public speaking.

Qualifications: knowledge, experience & skills

  • A Master's degree in environmental studies, peace and conflict studies, international development or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience and a substantial track record of working on climate & peace
  • Extensive knowledge of climate change, environmental issues, natural resource management and the intersection with peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
  • Familiar with environmental peacebuilding frameworks, approaches, and best practices.
  • Experience in programme development, strong analytical and research skills and the ability to conduct climate and conflict analysis and risk assessments
  • Existing international network in the field of climate and conflict
  • Flexible and able to master challenging situations
  • Fluent in English and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
