The purpose of this Postdoctoral Research Role in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University is to conduct research on the project ‘War and geos: the environmental legacies of conflict’. The project was originally awarded as a European Research Council Starting Grant and is now funded through the UKRI Frontier Research Guarantee Scheme. Led by Dr Mark Griffiths, ‘War and geos’ is a five-year, interdisciplinary study into the long-term effects of “precision” munitions used in recent military operations in Gaza and Iraq. The role involves mapping, and analysing weapon deployment using geographical methods (e.g., cartography, forensic cartography, GIS, archival research) to contribute to inquiry into munitions residues and environmental effects.
