Based in Brussels and active in over a dozen countries, the European Institute of Peace (www.eip.org) is an independent organisation working collaboratively with the parties to the conflict, those who represent people suffering from insecurity or at risk of violence, as well as European decision-makers and the conflict prevention, resolution and mediation community.

EIP provides practical experience, technical expertise, and policy advice on conflict resolution. EIP uses a variety of tools to help it do this, including analysis, mapping and design of peace processes and agreements, facilitating policy discussions, and proposing practical engagement, for example through inclusive dialogue and mediation support. 

EIP is looking for a Climate and Environmental Peacemaking Analyst to support Peace Practice and Innovation unit (PPI).

The Role

Analysis and Research:

  • Conduct an integrated climate and conflict analysis at the local level in Somalia. 
  • Support mapping of programmes and projects related to peacebuilding, environmental governance, and climate change adaptation implementing in the five Federal Member States of Somalia.  
  • Support additional research. 

Project implementation:

  • Support delivery of project activities, including workshops and output documents on environmental peacemaking.
  • Narrative reporting prepared and submitted on time and to specification, including analysis of results at output and outcome levels.
  • Support communications outputs. 

Skills and experiences

  • Education: Advanced university degrees (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, peace and conflict studies, environmental or climate science, and relevant discipline to environmental peacemaking. 
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience relevant to conflict-affected and fragile countries is a requirement, and experience in Somalia is an advantage.
  • Conflict analysis and research experience on the environmental and climate dimensions of peace and security is a requirement.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (QGIS) and climate and conflict data management and visualisation is an advantage. 
  • Familiarity with the European Union’s framework for conflict analysis is an advantage, including European External Action Service (EEAS)’s Conflict Analysis Guidance Note and Council of Europe’s Concept for an Integrated Approach on Climate Change and Security. 
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyse and synthesise data from a wide variety of sources and present the resulting information in a clear and concise format.
  • Demonstrated capacity to support peace processes and to tailor solutions to respond stakeholder needs.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
  • Analytical thinking, planning, organizing and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work under tight time constraints.
  • Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement, other languages (Somali and Arabic) are an advantage.

What EIP is offering

  • Consultancy contract from July 2023​ to December 2023.
