The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a policy and action research organisation promoting sustainable development and linking local priorities to global challenges. IIED is based in London and work on five continents with some of the world’s most vulnerable people to strengthen their voice in the decision-making arenas that affect them. With more than 150 members of staff working with associates and partners around the world, IIED has been at the forefront of evidence-based policymaking in sustainable development for over 50 years.

The Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Team is responsible for institute-level systems for setting targets and capturing results from our work; ensuring that we are a learning organisation; and engaging in broader external discourse on effective Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning for the development and policy research sectors. The team consists of five members, and it is led by the Head of Monitoring Evaluation and Learning.

IIED is now looking for a Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Manager to join the team on a permanent, full-time basis, working 35 hours per week.

  • Salary of £41,031 - £50,976 per annum, depending on experience (The salary range advertised in GBP is applicable in the UK only. The salary and benefits package in another country, would depend on the local terms and conditions of the country where the successful candidate lives/works. We only use the UK salary structure to determine starting salaries, but it will not apply to salaries outside the UK thereafter).
  • 25 days' annual leave per year, increasing by one day for every completed 2 years' service up to 30 days for full-time staff with 10 years' service. IIED is also closed between Christmas and New Year and this is additional paid holiday

The Role

As a Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Manager, you will improve our capacity to better understand effective approaches and strategies for sustainable development.

You will conduct impact assessments using a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Ensuring robust monitoring, you will review each stage of the evaluation and research cycles and contribute to the development and testing of innovative designs.

Providing substantive input into major projects related to sustainability, you will support research groups to use our systems and engage in UK and international discussions on MEL methodologies. Evaluating policies, grant schemes and projects, you will oversee Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks for national and sub-national authorities.

Additionally, you will:

  • Analyse geospatial data for land cover map, marine monitoring and climate risks
  • Participate in group and cross-organisational activities, initiatives and working groups
  • Contribute to strategy and programme reviews through core meetings and discussions
  • Support research groups to develop their own MEL capacities and those of their partners

About You

To be considered as a Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Manager, you will need:

  • Experience of conducting, and/or commissioning evaluations including establishing criteria, dimensions and standards; data gathering and analysis; and co-ordination of evaluation teams
  • Experience of applying the quantitative methods used in evaluating international development programmes
  • Experience of supporting the establishment of monitoring and evaluation systems for international development projects
  • Experience of supporting colleagues in utilising monitoring and evaluation techniques for different interventions
  • Experience or an academic background in conducting geospatial analysis and exposure to using geospatial data in sustainable development research or evaluation
  • A high level of analytical skills
  • The ability to analyse qualitative, quantitative and geospatial data
  • An understanding of evaluation methodologies used in international development, and in the evaluation of policies of national governments and international institutions
  • A degree in a relevant subject
