Environmental Peacebuilding Association and SAGE Publishing Announce New Journal "Environment and Security"

Apr 22, 2022 | Environmental Peacebuilding Association and SAGE Publishing

The Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPAx) and SAGE Publishing are partnering to launch a new peer-reviewed journal, Environment and Security – the first peer-reviewed journal dedicated to understanding environment, climate, security, conflict, and peace linkages.

Environment and Security is an interdisciplinary, international, peer-reviewed journal. It seeks to publish innovative research on the intersections between environmental and security issues, and to inspire debates by decision makers and practitioners. The first of the quarterly publications is due to be published in the second half of 2023.

The journal’s title refers to security in a wide sense, encompassing international security, national security, human security, ontological security, and securitization, among others. Environment and Security is designed to provide a global forum for the growing group of scholars in these fields and is committed to theoretical and methodological diversity. It welcomes contributions from a wide range of disciplines, including anthropology, environmental studies, economics, geography, law, peace and conflict, political science, and sociology – as well as insights from practitioners.

The founding Editor-in-Chief will be Dr. Ashok Swain, an academic and professor at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, Sweden.

Dr. Swain said, “We are delighted that the rapidly growing body of researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers will finally have a dedicated forum in which to document emerging scientific knowledge, share experiences, advance theory, and distil understanding about the numerous intersections between environment and security. We urgently need this journal to accelerate learning and practice on a wide range of issues from climate security to environmental cooperation and conflict prevention to addressing the environmental damage of armed conflicts in Ukraine, Yemen, and elsewhere.”

Dr. Swain will be supported by five Associate Editors: Carl Bruch, Esq. (Environmental Law Institute); Dr. Tobias Ide (Murdoch University); Dr. Päivi Lujala (University of Oulu); Dr. Richard Matthew (University of California, Irvine); and Dr. Erika Weinthal (Duke University). Dr. Ide, who catalyzed the creation of the journal, said, “With the Environmental Peacebuilding Association, a biennial International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding, and now a peer-reviewed journal, we have the core institutional infrastructure necessary for the field of environmental security and peacebuilding to thrive.”

Miranda Nunhofer, Vice President of Research at SAGE Publishing said, “We are proud to be partnering with the Environmental Peacebuilding Association to provide a much-needed home for the global community of researchers and practitioners working to address the interlinked challenges of climate change, global conflict, and other environmental and security issues. Environment and Security will provide a timely space for debate within this growing field, which is of critical concern among policy makers, intergovernmental bodies, and conflict resolution groups.”

Further information on the journal’s Editorial Board and opportunities to contribute will be made available soon.
