USA: Environmental Peacebuilding Postdoctoral Scholar

Dr. Jamon Van Den Hoek (www.conflict-ecology) in the Geography Program in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month position, with benefits, beginning as early as May 2022, and no later than September 1, 2022. The person hired for this position will conduct research focused on environmental peacebuilding over shared transboundary waters in Israel, Palestine, and Jordan, as well as Bosnia-Herzegovina with potential to expand towards a global analysis.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will work on a project funded by a United States Institute of Peace (USIP) Environment, Conflict, and Peacebuilding grant as part of a multi-institutional research team spanning Oregon State University, American University, and EcoPeace Middle East.

Principal responsibilities of this position will include conducting an integrated analysis of environmental and peace/conflict changes during and following environmental peacebuilding interventions; contributing to the development and validation of environmental peacebuilding theory through empirical and desk research; managing project data; and summarizing major project findings in research papers, policy briefings, popular media, and/or curricula in collaboration with project team members.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to pursue independent, mentored research, to strengthen analytical and writing skills, and to both lead and co-author papers. The postdoc will also be able to interact with a rich, multidisciplinary community of scholars, and to attend conferences and workshops. Remote work is possible.

Qualifications for this position include:

  • A Ph.D. in Geography, Peace and Conflict Studies, Environmental Sciences, or a related field (required);
  • Experience researching environmental peacebuilding or hydro-diplomacy scholarship and/or practice (desirable);
  • Excellent writing skills and experience with submission of manuscripts to academic journals, with a demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals (required);
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary research team (required);
  • Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative methodological skills (required);
  • Experience with geospatial data management and analysis in a GIS environment and interview/focus group data collection (desirable);
  • Proficiency with Python or R (desirable);
  • Fluency in written and spoken English (required);
  • Proficiency in Hebrew and/or Arabic (desirable)
