The Department of History seeks to appoint a research fellow in Latin American history to work on a NERC-AHRC funded project on 'Integrating ecological and cultural histories to inform sustainable and equitable futures for the Colombian páramos'. Working primarily with Professor Henrice Altink, Dr Sabine Clarke and Dr Helen Cowie, and liaising extensively with other members of the project team in the UK and Colombia, your research duties will focus on the multiple values provided by the páramo ecosystem and their relationship with communities’ livelihoods and wellbeing in the past, present and future. You will also be responsible for day-to-day project planning, for liaising with other researchers on the project in the University of York and at other collaborating institutions in the UK and in Colombia, and for coordinating the project data management plan.
You should have a PhD in Latin American History or a cognate field relevant to the post with a specialism in social and cultural history, and ideally have knowledge of environmental history. You should have professional working proficiency in Spanish and be able to apply a range of historical research techniques and write up research for publication in high-quality journals.
The department is one of the founding Departments (with Politics and Environment) of the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC). You will play a role in this major new interdisciplinary centre for research, teaching and partnership for global development, which seeks to collaborate with partners worldwide to create new interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to tackle global challenges.
The position is full-time and based in the Department of History, Heslington. The position is available from 1 December 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter, until 31 July 2021.

The starting salary is £32,236 per annum, on grade 6 of the University’s salary scales.
This post is available on a fixed term basis for 33 months.
