During July, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) ceded control of Tabqa Dam to the Syrian Government in Damascus. The SDF have acted, while forces loyal to Assad appear poised to finally declare victory in the seven-year conflict that has beleaguered the country. The dam itself was a major strategic target in the region’s fight against Islamic State and was re-captured by the SDF in May 2017. Negotiations are now underway between the SDF and Damascus to determine the status of Kurdish areas in a post-conflict Syria.
