The Government earned more than K5.3 billion from selling seized timber at auction in fiscal year 2016-17, U Ohn Win, minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, told the Pyithu Hluttaw on Thursday. Although the minister did not say how many tonnes of illegal timber would be seized during 2017-18, U Kyaw Aung Lwin, who represents Sidoktaya township in Magwe Region, said that more than 14,000 tonnes were seized in April and May this year. “Under the democratic government, we have seen a lot of timber being smuggled out,” he said.
