The demands from the minister, Martin Kabwelulu, came after a Global Witness investigation showed up to US$17 million of gold produced by privately held Kun Hou Mining was likely smuggled out of the country. The problems with illegal mining on a mass scale in the DRC have been known for many years but the Global Witness investigation exposed the depths of corruption between armed groups, the artisanal gold trade and certain public officials in Shabunda territory, according to the IBTimes report.
