Liberia's speaker of the house, Alex Tyler, formerly of the ruling Unity Party, stepped down on 1 September over his alleged role in a corruption scandal. Tyler's resignation should unblock an impasse in parliament that emerged following his initial decision to remain in office, paving the way for key legislation to be passed.
