Myanmar: Move to Restart Controversial Dam Sparks Protests in Myanmar

Civil society groups and local communities have reiterated their opposition to a controversial dam on one of Myanmar's major rivers following an alleged move to resume construction 15 years after it was suspended. On May 6, a coalition of 49 civil society organizations and activists from all over the country issued a joint statement to oppose the planned restarting of the Myitsone Dam project on the Irrawaddy River in Kachin State in northern Myanmar.
