Environmental Peacebuilding Research Volunteers Needed

The Environmental Law Institute (ELI), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the University of Tokyo, and McGill University seek Visiting Attorneys, Visiting Researchers, and Research Interns to assist the Environmental Peacebuilding partnership’s research program on a volunteer basis.

Volunteers are responsible for performing legal research, analysis, writing, and editing on a wide variety of ongoing and time-limited research projects. Topics of past and on-going projects include drafting environmental humanitarian assessments, editing chapters in a book series on post-conflict natural resource management, creating profiles of natural resource benefit-sharing trust funds, writing reports on United Nations Security Council Resolutions, long-term return after natural disasters, and other topics. Visiting Attorneys may also be asked to collect and post materials for the Environmental Peacebuilding Online Knowledge Platform and Community of Practice (for more information on the Knowledge Platform and the Community of Practice, see www.environmentalpeacebuilding.org).

The position may be partially or fully off-site, and much work can be conducted remotely. However, candidates in the Washington, DC area are encouraged to work on-site for a limited number of hours each week.

Candidates should:

- Possess superior research, writing, and interpersonal communication skills
- Have a strong desire to gain knowledge of the environmental field, as well as interest in natural resource management and/or peacebuilding
- Be focused, independent, reliable, and meticulous
- Be available to work at least 15-20 hours per week for at least 3 months

Fluency in another UN language (French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, or Arabic) is a plus.

A strong academic background in law is required, but specific environmental experience is not mandatory. Compensation is not available.

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis. We are seeking candidates who are available to start work as soon as possible, but there is no fixed start date. Candidates are asked to commit to work for a minimum of 3 months.
