United States: Assistant Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies/Geography

Colgate University's Peace and Conflict Studies Program (P- Con) and Department of Geography invite applications for a jointly appointed tenure-track assistant professorship in Peace and Conflict Studies and Geography, with a focus on environmental security, to begin Fall 2015. Completion of Ph.D. is expected prior to or shortly after the date of hire. 

We seek a scholar who focuses on extractive violence and conflict in the context of issues such as global ecological destruction, resource scarcity, and climate change. Preference will be given to candidates whose scholarship is grounded in field research, or to those well situated in comparative or systemic theoretical analysis of the environment/extraction/security nexus. We especially desire to hire a scholar able to employ and teach diverse methodologies for the study of extractive conflict.

The successful candidate will provide new intellectual connection points between Geography and P-Con, helping to bridge the methodological and theoretical interests of these two dynamic faculties around environmental security. Colgate University is a highly selective, liberal arts university located in Central New York. Founded in 1970, Colgate's P- Con Program focuses on reflexive and critical analysis of modern conflict. The P-Con faculty work both in and across our many disciplines; our curriculum is highly interdisciplinary. Colgate's Department of Geography has wide scholarly expertise in human, nature-society, and physical geography. The Department is committed to a strong methods curriculum, involving GIS, qualitative analytical methods, and quantitative techniques.

The successful candidate typically will teach required courses in peace and conflict studies (PCON 111 or 218 or 225 and PCON 479), "Environmental Security," (GEOG/PCON 329), and several electives every year related to resource extraction and armed conflict or the environmental impacts of war and militarism. Colgate faculty are expected to participate in all-university programs, including the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum. The candidate's courses might be eligible for cross-listing in Colgate's Environmental Studies program curriculum as well. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively in the design or execution of interdisciplinary academic workshops or public events.
