The German Red Cross (GRC) is part of a worldwide community assisting victims of conflicts and disasters and people affected by social or health related crises. The Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement provides vulnerable people with assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the Movement: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. The German Red Cross assists in disaster response, rehabilitation and capacity building projects internationally on appeals of their sister organisations within the Movement. GRC is currently seeking a Project Manager Food Security / Organic Farming The GRC jointly implements two food security projects in Gedaref and Kassala States in East Sudan with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS). One project is BMZ-financed and is running since May 2015 – June 2017, the other one is EuropeAid-funded with a project period from January 2015 – December 2017. The projects aim to increase agricultural diversification in altogether 16 villages in rural districts in Gedaref and Kassala, Sudan, to make the population more resilient in regards to food security. The projects focus on community-based activities and community mobilization and farmers are trained through the Farmer Field School approach and Trainings of Trainers (ToT). Sustainable agricultural and organic farming techniques are demonstrated and water harvesting systems constructed. Village gardens are established and trees planted in the villages. In addition, community committees are formed and strengthened to contribute to food security planning in their communities. The project manager will be subordinated technically to a GRC program coordinator who is in overall charge of the two projects. Duration: starting June 2016 for one year with possibility of extension   Location: Kassala, Sudan, with regular visits to Gedaref Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Comprehensive project implementation in close cooperation with the partner, the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS)
  • Training and capacity building of SRCS staff in general project and finance
  •  management, donor regulations and food security / community mobilization
  • Coordination with major stakeholders in the region (regional and local administration, UN organizations, NGOs etc.)
  •  Monitoring of budgets, finances, procurement and administration according to grant
  •  regulations
  •  Narrative and financial reporting for donors (BMZ and EuropeAid) and German Red Cross
Required Skills:
  • Profound work experience in the fields of organic farming and food security in an international cooperation context, preferably in Africa
  • Preferably university degree in rural development, agriculture or similar 
  • Experience in managing donor funded projects (knowledge of BMZ and / or EuropeAid requirements will be an asset)
  • Strong project management skills, particularly PCM, reporting and monitoring
  • Experience and interest in participatory methods, community mobilization and good training skills
  •  High degree of intercultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively in multicultural
  • environments
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Readiness to work in remote areas
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability and agreement to adhere to the Red Cross Red Crescent Fundamental
  • Principles
  • Oral and written fluency in English, knowledge of Arabic would be an asset
  • Ability to complete a thorough medical screening process 'working abroad under specific climate and health conditions'

GRC offers you a compensation package according to the collective employment agreement of the GRC as well as an expatriation allowance during your mission. Depending on the post specific situation we either provide you with an accommodation or a personal allowance to cover your accommodation. In addition to a full insurance package (health insurance for residence abroad, private accident insurance, private liability insurance, luggage insurance) GRC is as well covering a home flight withing a 12-month period of assignment and medical check ups before and after your mission.
