The world is seeing increased ambitions to limit the impact of climate change, and to improve the mitigation of environmental damage. COP26 will occur this year and will focus on adaptation and resilience to the effects of climate change. Donor governments are building climate change response mechanisms into their planning, and in the case of the US administration, are ‘treating the climate crisis as the urgent national security threat that it is’.
Regardless of international policy decisions, HALO recognises that climate change is a driver of conflict and displacement and seeks to minimise its own carbon footprint, and to support or lead conservation projects wherever possible. Moreover, HALO’s own operations may have some negative impact on the natural environment. We recognise the need to take positive, practical steps to address this and need to be more innovative in seeking solutions or alternative ways of operating.
Finally, we are seeking to scrutinise our own organisational behaviours; energy supply, global logistics chains and air travel are all contributory factors to HALO’s carbon footprint. We want to find meaningful and cost-effective ways of mitigating this impact and improving year on year.
HALO needs support in making these plans a reality. We are seeking a professionally qualified and experienced Global Conservation & Environment Specialist to:
- Act as an internal focal point for all HALO’s 26 programmes on matters pertaining to the environment, conducting visits to HALO programmes where required
- Lead an internal Conservation Board to assess and approve pilot environmental projects (funding already secured)
- Seek out and realise funding opportunities or partnerships that might align HALO’s work with environmentally beneficial initiatives, ensuring projects are not detrimental to HALO’s other operational requirements
- Act as the Angola programme’s Conservation Liaison Officer, to support the Okavango project as it develops, enabling partnerships and initiatives to deliver success
- Represent HALO in all relevant sector working groups to grow HALO’s understanding of best environmental practices
- Assess HALO’s existing processes and drive forward HALO’s approach to sustainability in all areas
- Produce an Environmental and a Conservation Implementation Plan as well as an Annual Report on HALO’s sustainability practices
Terms of the position will depend on the applicant’s experience, but the role will be in place for a minimum of eighteen months depending on start date, with an anticipated extension depending on the success of this first phase.

Requirements
- Masters level education in an area pertaining to environment and/or conservation protection
- Professional experience in an international organisation in an environment-related role (desirable)
- Proof of research abilities and examples of publications in a specialist subject (desirable)
- Excellent network of professional associates, to enable additional subject matter expertise if required
- Analytical capability combined with practical problem solving skills
- Candidate should be willing to travel between three-six months of the year
- Role location is flexible, but would report to Chief of Staff in the UK Headquarters
