Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Governance Affairs Office engages with and guides all relevant stakeholders ranging from Member States, major groups and stakeholders as well as business and the private sector. These internships are in various units of the UN Environment, West Asia Office and cover all the thematic areas of UN environment work as well as administration.

Purpose: To provide an opportunity for students and graduates to obtain a first-hand impression of the day-to-day working environment of the United Nations, learn, develop new skills and gain experience. The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work 35-40 hours per week under the supervision of the officer to whom assigned.

UN Environment West Asia office is looking for several interns to substantively support the thematic areas of UN environment Programme of work. The thematic areas and the Sub programmes of the UN Environment are:

1.Climate change
2.Resilience to Disasters and Conflicts
3.Healthy and Productive Ecosystems
4.Environmental governance
5.Chemicals and waste
6.Resource efficiency
7.Environment under review

Duty station: Manama, Bahrain

Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the office to which the intern is assigned to; the Sub programme to which the intern is assigned to; the nature of specific projects and the internship duration.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

-Support the implementation of the supervisors’ areas of work in topics including but not limited to: Ecosystems Management and country programmes
-Assist the Regional Ecosystems Management Officer in the timely delivery of materials and research in support of the West Asia Strategy
-Assist with efforts to develop cooperation and partnerships with the private sector and other stakeholders globally and from the West Asia region
-Conduct scientific and policy research on various topics and compile, summarize, and present relevant information
-Draft short reports, memos, briefs, correspondence and other written materials in support of areas of work
-Assist in the planning and coordination of events, conferences, meetings, calls and presentations
-Contribute to outreach events on relevant topics
-Contribute to the social media messages and media newsletters for the sub-programme
-Participate in group discussions and contribute insights, ideas and feedback on topics and issues
-Provide additional support as needed

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a.Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b.Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c.Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.
