The report Drought in East Africa, Middle East and Central Asia, published by the Joint Research Centre on 20 May 2026, confirms that the period 2021–2025 was the warmest five-year span recorded since 1981 across most of these regions. This sustained warming, combined with persistent precipitation deficits, significantly reduced soil moisture levels and triggered repeated drought episodes.
