The head of the Democratic Republic of Congo's state-owned mining company Gecamines has been fired from his post for "gross negligence", reports Mining Weekly. The decision to axe Gecamines president Ahmed Kalej Nkand came from DRC President Joseph Kabila himself, and was announced on state television on Saturday, though no more details were given at that time.

The following day, DRC Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo told the press that Nkand had committed errors of governance, and that these were revealed by a professional audit, according to Mining Weekly.
