The socio-economic status of most farmers remains low even though the agricultural sector accounts for about 30 per cent of the GDP, President U Htin Kyaw said in his message to the ceremony to mark the Peasants’ Day which falls on March 2. Around 70 per cent of the country’s total population is living in the rural area. The major business is farming. Due to climate changes, natural disasters, other disasters and deforestation, the country is facing a decline in soil quality, the message says.
