South China Sea: China to Build Lighthouses on Five Disputed Islands

BEIJING — China is planning to build lighthouses on five islands in the South China Sea, the official China News Agency reported yesterday, in what would be Beijing’s latest rebuttal of criticisms of its construction projects in the disputed waters.

The article quoted an official from the Maritime Safety Administration, Yang Qing, as saying that possible construction sites on five of the Paracel Islands had already been selected and that surveying had begun on July 27.
