Timber smuggling is still thriving in Kachin and Northern Shan State, according to political leaders, people close to timber smugglers and locals who spoke with the Daily Eleven.   A person with ties to the illegal timber trade said that although the smuggling of timber logs from Kachin State has declined, timbers from northern Shan State are now being illegally taken to China.
