Almost three decades ago, as a civil war raged in Sudan, authorities signed a contract with Sweden’s Lundin Oil for oil exploitation in an area of Unity State, in what is now South Sudan. The area, known as Block 5A, was relatively peaceful and under rebel forces’ control at the time.
