Recently reinforced Iraqi security forces at the Baiji refinery, backed by Iraqi Army helicopters, repelled on Tuesday the latest attempt by anti-government militants to take the Baiji refinery. According to two people living in the residential areas around the refinery, militants belonging or allied with the so-called Islamic State (IS) organization detonated a car bomb at the main, western gate of the refinery around 4:30 p.m., followed by mortar and heavy machine gun fire.
