Residents of Hpakant are concerned that jade mining companies will lie about the numbers of backhoes they use in excavations during an ongoing Union-level investigation due to lack of transparency surrounding the investigation.
The Union-level investigation team includes Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Gen Aung Soe, deputy director of the Road Transportation Administration Department Chit Ko Ko, the director of the Ministry of Commerce and the director of the Myanmar Customs Department. Aung Nyunt Thein, the director of the Ministry of Mines, instructed the jade companies to park their vehicles and recall vehicles from other areas to be investigated.
