Police and security guards destroyed the homes of about 200 families who have been unable to find suitable housing since being evicted from a village in Yangon Region’s Hlegu township 15 years ago to make way for a dam.The families were forcibly relocated from Thayatchaung village in Kyarin village-tract for the “Kalihtaw” dam project in May 2000, a statement from a group representing them said.Local authorities relocated more than 100 households from the village to two villages in Kyarin village-tract. The plots they were given, however, were low-lying paddy fields that were unsuitable for housing.
