In Niger, the agricultural sector employs 8 out of 10 people. It is estimated that if the gender gap was closed in agricultural productivity, it would unlock financial gains that could lift over 25,000 Nigeriens out of poverty (pdf). MCC's $437 million compact with Niger is designed to address factors restricting economic growth in the country. The compact is investing in irrigation infrastructure and management systems, climate-resilient agricultural production, upgraded roads to improve market access, and better management of natural resources. The compact also aims to increase incomes for small-scale agriculture- and livestock-dependent families in rural areas, by supporting local entrepreneurs to expand their agricultural businesses and increase market sales of targeted commodities such as rice and peanut oil.
