With funds from the GEF, since 2019, FAO has initiated the reforestation of 2,718 hectares of deforested pine, pine nut, and walnut forests in Paktya province. As a result of these efforts, 71 home-based walnut and pine nut nurseries have been established. 197,360 walnut trees, 29,160 pine nut trees, and 174,360 almond saplings have been planted as afforestation and reforestation initiatives across 2,718 hectares of deforested area. In addition, FAO supported the local communities with alternative livelihood options to reduce the pressure on forests in terms of Agroforestry plot establishment in 134 ha of land, distribution of 2,959 fuel-efficient cookstoves, and 300 backyard poultry packages.
