Omer Al-Bashir is believed to be planning a visit to the area for his April elections campaign.

Paul Dhel Gum, the State Minister of Information and government spokesman said that Abyei is part of South Sudan's Warrap State and sees no reason for Bashir to come and conduct his campaign in an area that is not part of Sudan’s territory.

"We reject Bashir's plan to visit Abyei area.  It is an attempt from Khartoum to encroach into South Sudan’s territory. UNISFA must stop such provocative activity from the Khartoum government," Gum stated.

The oil rich region is disputed and claimed by the two governments in Juba and Khartoum.
The Ngok Dinka region was part of South Sudan but administratively annexed to the Kordofan region in 1905 under the British rule.
