The mining sector in Colombia has been facing difficult challenges in recent years. Most notably, there have been a series of referendums across the country since last year in which several communities have voted to prohibit mining in their area. Other legal challenges and environmental concerns have also persisted while the debate continues to rage about what some people call informal (or artisanal) mining and others call illegal mining.
