Hundreds of migratory bird species that flock to an Afghan marsh on the outskirts of war-torn Kabul are to receive UN protection. Once a royal hunting ground, the Kol-e-Hashmat Khan wetlands are a natural sanctuary for the thousands of storks, egrets, pelicans and flamingos that migrate north across the Hindu Kush every spring.
