On 16 June 2016, Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, together with Bernd Lange, chairman of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) in the European Parliament, Iuliu Winkler, Member of the EP, and Lilianne Ploumen, Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, chaired the EP press conference on Conflict Minerals, at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium. The EU agreed on a framework to stop the financing of armed groups through trade in conflict minerals, after negotiations between the Commission, Council and Parliament. It aims for EU companies to source tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold responsibly. These minerals are typically used in everyday products such as mobile phones, cars and jewellery.
