An Early Look at the EU Rule on Conflict Minerals

On March 5th, 2014 the EU released a new proposal for a regulation governing the “responsible trading strategy for minerals from conflict zones”. Indications from our colleagues working closely on this issue suggest that its very early days for the regulation and there remains a debate within the EU itself on whether the initiative will be voluntary or mandatory – a debate which will continue over the next 18 months until the law is passed.
