The Guam Green Growth Initiative was launched earlier this year, and dozens of leaders from the government, business, nonprofit and academic community came together to commit Guam to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including making improvements to gender equality on our island. We are already excelling in certain areas. For instance, in 2019 Guam set the world record for highest number of women in government leadership positions when we elected Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero as our first female governor. That year we also elected 10 female senators and had Justice Katherine Maraman serving as our Supreme Court Chief Justice. However, Guam still has issues with sexual and domestic violence as well as lack of access to sexual and reproductive health and services. We can and must make improvements locally to better our island.
