Women living in rural and poor communities are resilient, resourceful and hard-working. They play an invaluable role in supporting their families, building resilience to face the climate crisis and they also form a substantial proportion of their local agricultural labour force. They are driving forwards sustainable development within their communities and, as the UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said:

“As early adopters of new agricultural techniques, first responders in crises and entrepreneurs of green energy, rural women are a powerful force that can drive global progress.”

Despite this, they are still among the most marginalised people within their countries, and they are not given the recognition or income that they deserve.
