Discussion: Peace and Environmental Protection in Colombia

Peace in Colombia promises to bring many environmental benefits to the country but also poses environmental risks associated with the rural development plans contemplated in the post-conflict agenda. The development of industries in areas that have been off-limits due to security concerns, the reintegration of many former combatants in rural areas, and the land restitution process which aims to return lands to victims of the conflict could increase deforestation.

What are the key challenges and potential solutions to implementing sustainable rural reform in Colombia? How can the government’s plans for the post-conflict period provide an opportunity to advance conservation in Colombia and the country’s ability to meet its climate change commitments? How can international donors support environmentally sustainable implementation of the peace process?
