Recognizing that bad governance and a lack of social resilience are often contributing causes of violent conflict, this chapter provides an overview to key elements of good governance, including transparency and access to information, opportunities for meaningful participation, accountability, and fairness. It also presents resilience as a framework for improving the ability of a society to absorb a shock concerning the environment, natural resources, or climate – and for it to recover quickly, efficiently, and fairly.
