Since the end of the Cold War, the Arctic region has drawn little attention compared to other areas of geopolitical competition, such as East Asia or the Middle East. The benign nature of post-Cold War Arctic politics was partly due to the stances of the eight Arctic states (henceforth referred to as the ‘Arctic 8’).
