Join us for a high-level panel discussion with leading international experts as they debate the findings of UNEP & UN DPA’s report “Natural Resources and Conflict: A Guide for Mediation Practitioners” and reflect on their personal experiences in mediating and resolving natural resource conflicts.

Speakers Include:

Michael MØLLER, Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva
Päivi KAIRAMO, Ambassador of Finland to the United Nations in Geneva
Alan DOSS, Executive Director of the Kofi Annan Foundation and former Special Representative to the Secretary General in DR Congo and Liberia
Michael BROWN, Senior natural resources specialist and mediation expert, Professor of Practice in Natural Resources Conflict Mediation at McGill University
Isabelle BRISSETTE, Risks and Human Rights Manager, Rio Tinto
Renée LARIVIÈRE, Deputy Director-General, Development and Learning, Interpeace

Over the last 60 years, up to 60% of all civil wars have had a link to natural resources. While all major peace agreements between 2005 and 2014 contained provisions on natural resources, conflicts associated with natural resources are more likely to relapse during the first five years of the peace agreement, making effective provisions on natural resources crucial. Join the discussion:

What do we know about natural resources and conflict?
Can mediation be a successful tool in resolving resource conflicts?
What can the UN system do to deploy mediation support for resource conflicts
in a more sustained and systematic way?  Kindly RSVP by 13 November COB at Amanda.Kron@unep.org
Seating is limited. Registration is essential to obtain security clearance for the Palais des Nations.
