Climate Security Roundtable

Jul 22, 2015 | Center for a New American Security
Washington, D.C.

Please join CNAS for an off-the-record roundtable discussion on climate security. This workshop will address the interplay of water, agriculture, and health in a changing climate. Specifically, speakers will explore how the effects of climate change strain existing systems for water supply and distribution and agricultural cultivation and create new challenges for public health. What are the consequences of maintaining the status quo of current governance, regulatory and legal regimes for these systems critical to human health and prosperity?

The prospects for, and type of, agreement at the December Conference of the Parties (COP) in Paris will undoubtedly be the focus of much attention and effort this year for international leaders and the climate community. However, pressing climate-related issues, particularly in developing countries, will become increasingly severe in the near- and mid-term if they are unaddressed, regardless of any climate agreement that is reached. Against this background, CNAS is convening two workshops to explore some “on the ground” climate security challenges and the types of pragmatic solutions that can help to manage the effects of climate change.
