Colloquium on African Borders

The African Union Border Program (AUBP) supported by the GIZ and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Addis Ababa University (AAU) will hold a colloquium on African Borders on 29-30 October 2015 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The AUBP was adopted in 2007 by the African ministers in charge of border issues with the aim to foster border management to prevent border related disputes through delimitation and demarcation, and to accelerate African integration through promotion of cross border cooperation. Its vision is to transform African borders “from barriers to bridges”. The AUBP partners with the IPSS through the MoU signed with the African Union Commission. The IPSS established in 2007, works to promote peace and security in Africa through education, research and professional development. Since 2012, the Institute acts as a research, academic and policy advisory partner to the AUBP.

Following the 1st Colloquium on African Border Management in October 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the AUBP supported by the GIZ and in cooperation with the IPSS will hold a second colloquium to scientifically examine 1) basic principles of the AUBP (conflict prevention through delimitation and demarcation), 2) the coherence of border policies between the continental and the regional level, and, 3) in line with the 2015 theme of the African Union on women empowerment, explore the gender dimension of African border management.
