This event coincides with the launch of a new Chatham House research paper entitled, "Investing in Stability: Can Extractive Sector Development Help Build Peace?" The paper explores the impact of resource development in fragile conflict and post-conflict situations. At this event, the authors will present the key findings of the paper. They will argue that resource development may, in certain circumstances, contribute to political and socioeconomic conditions that may support peace, while stressing the unique relationship between extractive industries and conflict; the influence of context over agency; and difficulties in defining, measuring and attributing peaceful outcomes.

Chatham House research is exploring the links between natural resources, conflict and peace. The aim is to generate new thinking on a range of underexplored issues including environmental resource management and peace-building; the ways in which the international community can or should intervene in natural resource disputes; and the interplay between extractive industries, conflict and peace.
