At the World Bank Fragility, Conflict and Violence Forum next week there is a session on 'Data Revolutions for Better Governance of Extractive Industries in Fragile States' (Wed 1-3 pm room MC C1-100). It addresses of the main challenges to good governance of natural resources; the fundamental lack of access to information as well as limited civil society capacity to utilize existing data to better monitor extractive industry operations. Some governments are taking pioneering steps in creating data portals and a number of important “data revolutions” are being explored. These range from CODEX (Catalyzing Open Data for Extractive), MAP-EI (Mapping and Assessing the Performance of Extractive Industries in Fragile States) and the broadening of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) standard for disclosures. All seek to improve the generation of accurate and publicly accessible information on extractive industries. The panel on “Data Revolutions for Better Governance of Extractive Industries in Fragile States” will bring together some of the leading organizations involved in natural resource mapping, transparency and accountability, as well as open data platforms. In addition, the session will launch the Cases in Integrity Series, a set of multimedia stories of community monitoring of mining and oil & gas operations in DRC, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
