Al-Moumin Lecture
The Al-Moumin Distinguished Lecture on Environmental Peacebuilding recognizes leading thinkers who are shaping the field of environmental peacebuilding. The lecture series is co-sponsored by the Environmental Law Institute (ELI), American University, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and is named for Dr. Mishkat Al-Moumin, Iraq’s first Minister of Environment, a human rights and environment lawyer, and a Visiting Scholar at ELI.
Distinguished Lecturers:
The Inaugural Al-Moumin Lecture on Environmental Peacebuilding was delivered by Michael L. Ross, a professor of political science at UCLA and a leading researcher on the resource curse. His lecture, delivered on March 19, 2013, was on “Natural Resources and Conflict: A Glimpse into the Future?”

The Second Distinguished Al-Moumin Lecture on Environmental Peacebuilding was delivered by Jon Barnett, professor of management and geography at Melbourne University; a lead author for the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; and co-editor of Global Environmental Change. Delivered on October 8, 2014, his lecture was on “Climate Change and Security: From Vicious to Virtuous Cycles.”

Liz Alden Wily will deliver the Third Al-Moumin Distinguished Lecture on Environmental Peacebuilding, entitled, "Communities & the State: Getting the Property Relationship Right for a Safer 21st Century." Ms. Wily is an independent tenure specialist who combines practitioner and research roles for global and national initiatives. She is an Affiliated Fellow of Van Vollenhoven Institute of Law at Leiden University in The Netherlands, an Associate of Katiba Institute in Kenya, and an Honorary Fellow of the Rights & Resources Initiative based in Washington.
