Building peace can only be truly successful if also the environment is protected. In violent conflicts, ecosystems are often suffering, if not destroyed. The exploitation of natural resources can be the key interest in a conflict setting. At the same time, environmental factors like a drought or flood and other effects of the climate crisis can lead to more tensions, more competition and conflicts. Thus, peacebuilding should include the protection of the environment.

In this training we will analyze case studies which demonstrate how environmental issues affect conflicts. Participants will apply tools for identifying environmental risks and for developing strategies in order to prevent and transform violent conflicts fueled by environmental factors.
