Disasters, Gender, Peace & Conflict

The number and intensity of disasters is increasing worldwide, while levels of armed conflict and gendered violence remain high. Regions with a history of armed conflicts are often particularly vulnerable to disasters, and evidence is increasing that disasters enhance armed conflict risks. Both disasters and violent conflicts often reveal and reinforce existing and intersecting inequalities, to the detriment of women, sexual minorities, and marginalised ethnic groups. At the same time, disasters can trigger community cooperation and the questioning of traditional gender roles. The latter often also play a role in reproducing various forms of violence. This panel aims to shed lights on the multifaceted and complex interlinkages between disasters, gender, peace, and conflict in various world regions.

This event is co-sponsored by the Disasters and Resilience Interest Group of the Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPAx), the EnPAx Gender Interest Group, and the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne.
