Global environmental change is increasingly recognized as a critical driver of threats to human, national, and international security. Sharing knowledge and experiences, in conjunction with open access to models, data, and analytic tools, is essential for an effective knowledge-action enterprise that can assist policy makers and society at large respond to emerging eco-security challenges.
Researchers have a number of concerns when interacting with national security practitioners and analysts. National security practitioners and analysts may not have sufficient time to keep up on the latest research and the differences between rapidly evolving models and predictions. Strong academic-national security partnerships can improve the relevance and utility of new capabilities, awareness of assumptions and uncertainties, and trust that capabilities will be appropriately developed and used.
An Invited Panel of high-level members of the national security and academic communities will address successful mechanisms for initiating and sustaining meaningful academic-intelligence partnerships in the Earth sciences.
